New Orleans Attorneys
New Orleans may be famous for Mardi Gras but above Canal Street, just up from the French Quarter is the Central Business District. Jump on the St. Charles Streetcar and you'll run into the Garden District. In such a diverse city, it makes sense that there would be a wide variety of attorneys with varying legal specialties. Many of these attorneys are women. In light of that, the Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) was formed in 1976.
Members of AWA include private law practices from civil to criminal; from judges to professors; from corporate to personal counsel; from law clerks to law students. They pride themselves as being an information and education resource as well as a professional organization that exudes community involvement. AWA doesn't just offer information about local female attorneys or even just education about their programs and other issues they believe in, but the organization also gets involved in numerous causes.
There is a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will protect consumers and require that insurance pays a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for mastectomy procedures. Right now, some insurance companies treat this almost as an outpatient procedure and some patients are sent home before they are ready, with tubes still attached. The AWA supports the bill along with Lifetime Television by encouraging people to sign a petition.
AWA also has a "Room With A View" project. The project's goal is to help others find the beauty in their environment. They are encouraging people to send a picture of the view of New Orleans from their office window. Members of the AWA also read to the children at Lafayette School in Mid-City each week. About 100 children benefit from the weekly readings. The project is spearheaded by Jaye Caffrey of McGlinchey Stafford.
The want community involvement and will gladly provide upon request AWA "activities throughout the year and regularly updated information on events and issues of legal, social and economic interest."
If you are looking for a female attorney in New Orleans, the AWA might be the best place to start. Look at their members and their areas of specialty. Don't be afraid to ask for references and to ask others for referrals.
